At 20:40 on 18 December 2024, fire engines from Hyndburn and Burnley attended a road traffic collision on the M56 westbound between junctions 9 and 8. Two casualties self-extricated and were treated by ambulance service. Fire crews made the scene safe and were in attendance for approximately forty minutes.
