Register your appliances to keep your home safe

Register your appliances to keep your home safe

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is encouraging residents to take part in Register My Appliance Week (20th–26th January 2025) to help keep their homes safe by registering household appliances.

With over 40 million large appliances in UK homes still unregistered, many households could miss out on crucial safety updates if a fault is identified. This puts residents at greater risk of experiencing an electrical fire or other issues caused by faulty appliances.

Across the UK, an estimated 133 million fridges, washing machines, and ovens are currently in use, yet nearly a third of households have never, or rarely, registered their appliances. Without registration, it becomes much harder for manufacturers to contact owners if a repair or recall is needed.

Why register your appliances?

  • Enhanced safety: Faults can develop over time. Registering appliances ensures manufacturers can contact you if safety repairs are needed.

  • Quick and easy: Most appliances can be registered without proof of purchase. All that is typically needed is the model and serial number.

  • Applies to all appliances: Whether new, second-hand, or refurbished, registration ensures your appliance is traceable for updates or repairs.

What about second-hand or nearly new appliances?

Many people are unaware that second-hand or older appliances can still be registered, even without a receipt. LFRS advises checking the condition and history of any pre-owned appliances and always asking why a product is discounted and whether it includes a warranty.

Here are common terms to understand when buying nearly new appliances:

  • Out-of-box/open box: Returned or display items, often with minor cosmetic damage.

  • Graded: New appliances returned due to imperfections or minor faults, repaired by the manufacturer.

  • Refurbished: Defective appliances that have been repaired and tested for resale.

  • Display models: Unused items from display settings, which may have blemishes or lack original packaging.
