Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is urging residents to stay safe while observing Ramadan, which will be celebrated from 1 March to 30 March 2025. With fasting, cooking, and community celebrations at the heart of Ramadan, it is essential to be mindful of safety risks, particularly in the kitchen and on the roads.
Last month, Blackburn Fire Station organised a launch event for the campaign. In attendance were Councillor Nikki Hennessy, local imams, representatives of the Lancashire Council of Mosques (LCM), leaders of local women’s groups, and colleagues from partner organisations such as Lancashire Constabulary.
Group Manager Jonny Ashton of LFRS said: "Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is aware that during the Ramadan celebrations, individual and community routines can change. These changes in routine can often bring about an increased risk of fire and road traffic-related incidents. To help support our communities, we have a number of key safety messages that we would like to share to enable the communities of Lancashire to celebrate safely and enjoy the Ramadan period."
Kitchen safety during Ramadan
Cooking is a central part of Ramadan, with many households preparing traditional dishes for iftar, the meal to break the fast. However, the combination of busy kitchens, distractions, and late-night cooking increases the risk of fires. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service advises residents to follow these safety tips:
Never leave cooking unattended: If it is necessary to answer the door or leave the kitchen, the stove or hob should be turned off.
Keep children safe: Children should be prevented from running around the kitchen to avoid accidental spills or burns.
Avoid loose clothing: Loose or flowing garments, such as jubbas, can easily catch fire. Sleeves should be tied back, and an apron should be worn for added safety.
Handle oil with care: Extra caution should be taken when frying. Oil should not be allowed to overheat, and water should never be used to extinguish an oil fire. A fire blanket or a damp cloth should be used instead.
Keep the cooking area clear: Flammable items such as dishcloths, packaging, or paper towels should be kept away from heat sources.
Test smoke alarms: Smoke alarms should be tested regularly to ensure they are in working order. Those without a smoke alarm should book a free home fire safety check.
Road safety advice
Roads can become busier during Ramadan, especially in the evenings as families travel to mosques or gather for iftar. Towards the end of Ramadan, celebrations for Eid al-Fitr often lead to increased traffic and excitement, which can heighten the risk of accidents. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service advises:
Drive carefully: Pedestrians should be considered, and speed limits should be adhered to.
Avoid distractions: Focus should remain on the road, and mobile phones should not be used while driving.
Wear seatbelts: All passengers should wear seatbelts at all times.
Community responsibility
Ramadan is a time of reflection, charity, and community spirit. Those with elderly or vulnerable neighbours should check in on them to ensure they are safe and supported. Households hosting family and friends should establish an escape plan and ensure all occupants are aware of it.
What to do in case of a fire
If a fire occurs:
Stay calm: If clothing catches fire, the correct response is to stop, drop, and roll.
Evacuate safely: The property should be vacated immediately, and 999 should be called.
Do not delay: There is no need to hesitate in contacting emergency services. Safety is always the priority.
